Thought it would be fun to do a post to answer some questions that were recently posted to my Facebook page.
Q: What gets you ready for a newborn session and how do you decide what props you want to use? (from Julia W.)
A: Once I receive the portrait agreement and deposit I call my mom-to-be and we discuss the colors, poses, and things she likes and dislikes. If she has seen an idea or inspiration somewhere like Pinterest, I will ask her to share the picture with me (it’s worth a thousand words you know)! From there I will see what I already have in the studio that will go with her vision, or sometimes I will go shopping for something specific. At the time of the session I will have a couple of options pulled together and let mom decide the final choices. It’s not a free-for-all in my prop closet, but rather an option A or option B sorta thing. Right before a session I will look at Pinterest or a few other websites to get some ideas for poses/props that I want to try.
Q: How do you find cool locations for photo shoots or decide if it’s a cool location? (from Shannon B.)
A: I love to get recommendations from clients. Some of my favorite places around Richmond are Meadow Farm at Crump Park, Deep Run Park, Maymont, my studio, and the horse farm I used to ride at. I love aged wood like old barns or buildings. I don’t shoot in direct sunlight, so shade is a must. I like clean and simple backgrounds that do not distract from the stars of the show.
Q: Tips for clothes to wear for shoots? Bright? Pattern? Neutral? (from Alyssa V.)
A: This blog post from Paint the Moon is right on the money. Click here to read all about what to wear.
